Living an Active & Healthy Lifestyle

Let’s break that phrase apart and analyze each part. We see three distinct terms that we can discuss: active, healthy, lifestyle. What does each mean and how to live each on?

Active means that you are able to perform everyday tasks with ease and engage in exercises regularly. Adults should accumulate 2 hours and 30 minutes (150 minutes) of moderate-intensity aerobic activity (i.e., brisk walking) every week or 1 hour and 15 minutes (75 minutes) of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity (i.e., jogging or running) every week or an equivalent mix of moderate- and vigorous-intensity aerobic activity. Health is not limited to only meaning that you are healthy physically, but mentally & emotionally as well. Physical health consists of being active and eating a well-balanced diet. Check out the Nutrition page to learn more about a healthy-balanced eating style. Mental health means that we can think and focus clearly, can determine right from wrong, and learn new things. Emotional health is what allows us to feel. Feel connected, feel confident, feel happy, trust and even sadness and anger. A good sense of emotional health allows you to handle yourself properly in any situation as well as determine when it is appropriate to act a certain way. We need to be conscious of our feelings. Controlling one’s emotions when necessary and letting them loose when the time is right is essential to emotional health. We need to experience the full spectrum of emotions for peak happiness to the deepest sadness. This is what helps us grow as individuals and we learn the most about ourselves through these experiences.

Lifestyle means that it is sustainable and being done consistently. Consistency is key! Your health & activity status should not be a fad. It should not only be for “beach season” or because you have an event coming up. Your health & activity status should be a continual state of maintenance or improvement.
